Hi my mother is a chemo patient, she had been throwing up a lot so we took her to the hospital. At the hospital they decided to have her drink barium to see if there was an obstruction. The liquid went through so she was sent home. About 2 days after she went back because she threw up everything. After some testing we found out the barium was stuck. It s been about 2 weeks and nothing will get it out. She s had enemas done she s taken stool softener, and they even went in to try and unblock it but nothing has happend.
hi Barium sulfate suspensions are provided by a radiologist or radiographic technologist to allow for better computer tomography of the gastrointestinal tract. The barium sulfate is excreted through defecation which require extra fluid intake to prevent constipation, which is a possible side effect. there seems to be paralytic-ileus-like syndrome in this patient. such patient respond to Lactulose 50% (Duphalac) as an effective agent in inducing bowel evacuation. ref Br Med J. 1972 Dec 2;4(5839):530-3. kindly also ensure adequate hydration of the patient. i am sure this will give results. Take Care
