How To Control Gestational Diabetes During 24th Week Of Pregnancy?

hi doctor,

my wife is 20 years old and she was diagnosed as gestational diabetes on 24th week of gestation. she tried diet control by avoiding sugar and carbs as much as possible for 3 weeks but the numbers were still high (fasting and 2hr PP). then she started to take metformin 850 mg tab once daily, yet no satisfactory control achieved. Now she is 31 weeks of gestation and her fasting BS readings renges from 155 to 170 mg/dl. her doctor started to give mixtard 30 SC insulin yesterday (10 units SC once daily) is that enough dose? should she take metformin beside mixtard?

thanks alot.

I understand your concern.
Previously only Insulin was recommended for diabetes during pregnancy. But now a days studies have showed us that Oral hypoglycaemic drugs like Metformin can be used without any harm to the foetus.
So, it depends upon the sugar levels and control whether to use Metformin or insulin. It will not be fair if I advise you regarding this as the treatment methods varies from doctor to doctor.
Please call your doctor for confirmation of your confusion.
All the best.
