How Soon Does It Take For Diarrhea To Stop After Taking Zifi?

Hi, My 6 month old baby is suddenly having motions for 4-5 times a day and green in colour. Earlier doctor prescribed Enterogermina twice a day for 5 days which didn’t help. We did the stool test and the pus cells came out to be 15-20 hpf and RBC 1-3 hpf. Now the doctor prescribed Zifi 50 4 ml for 5 days. We started it from yesterday evening. The stool is still green in colour which is more mucousy and the frequency today was 4 times. When will the new medicine show it’s effect and when will the stool return to its normal yellow color and frequency? Baby is on breastfeed and having mashed pulses once a day and vitamin D3 drops 0.5 ml

Hi,

It seems like your kid has viral diarrhea. Once it starts, it will take 5-7 days to completely get better. Unless the kid's having low urine output or is very dull or excessively sleepy or has blood in motion or green bilious vomiting. You need not worry. There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen it if unnecessarily used causing an antibiotic associated diarrhea.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops once daily for 14 days) and ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and a crucial part of the treatment.

If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your pediatrician). Regarding the diet - you can use Cerelac of any flavor. Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhea. You can give zinc supplements and ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridges and soups.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
