How Should Wrist, Knuckles And Fingers Swelling With Pain Be Treated?

My wife fell while walking a dog. The leash was in her right hand and she was pulled to the ground. As well as breaking her fall with her right hand the dog pulled her for a couple feet. We went to the er...xrays showed at that time no broken bones. It was very swollen and her fingers palm knuckles and wrist all hurt. That was six weeks ago. She has had some improvement, however they(knuckles and fingers) still swell up at the intersection of finger and top of hand. It hurts her alot. She has been taking IB, sometimes buddy tapes them, and tries to gently move them when they do not hurt. Should we go to see another dr? A specialist? When? Thank you. She is 54 yeras old and right handed and very active in helping her mom and dad as they are up in age. Again thanks. J.T.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,Thanks for your query. After going through your query I came to know that your wife fell while walking a dog. As per your saying her x ray is showing no broken bones. So it seems to be soft tissue injury with swollen hand and fingers. She should keep his hand elevated to reduce swelling. Active mobilizations exercises should be done as much as she can to reduce swelling. She is already tking ibuprofen which she can continue. She should visit physiotherapist for further treatment. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it. I do hope that you have found something helpful. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries. Wishing you good health. Take care.
