How Should Toilet Training Be Done For A 5-year-old Child?

My 5 yo nephew will not use toilet to have a bm. He sneaks a pull up and then has a bm. When he has to be changed and cleaned up, he fusses and gags. He seems able to hold his bm until he gets home and can get to the pull ups. He now toilets when urinating but that too was a longer process than with most children. Suggestions?

Hi,

The child has some type of aversion of the toilet or the bathroom in general. This may be best evaluated by a child psychologist to determine how best to approach the child in a nonthreatening way to get him to slowly become comfortable with using the toilet normally.

At the same time you've already mentioned that he did eventually come around to urinating in the toilet therefore, it may be the case that he will also do the same for having BM's.

If the child is in school then, you may also wish to check with the school psychologist (if one is available) regarding similar examples in other children they may have seen and how those kids best found their way to normal toileting.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
