How Safe Is Needle Biopsy For Treating Thyroid Disorder?

I have to have a fine needle biopsy on a nodule on my left side thyroid. The doctor said he would be using a freezing spray on my neck first. He said he has to stick my neck 3 times in order to get out what he needs to see if its benign or cancer He seems to think it s benign but he said looking at it on the sonogram from the side he says it looks a little jagged. The doctor said that I am mildly hyperthyroid from over active nodules. I want to know what you think and if the fine needle biopsy is going to be painful?

Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM!
I understand your query and i am trying to give you some more information.
After diagnosing a nodule at the thyroid gland, the next step is the examination of the hormonal status to see if the nodule is active, i.e., if it over produces thyroid hormones. If the results are suggestive for hyperthyroidism (as in your case) , the scintiscan is performed to see if the nodule is hot or is the rest of the thyroid responsible for this overproduction.
The hot nodules have a very low risk of malignancy as is not recommended to do FNAB (fine needle aspiration) in these cases. But if the nodule is cold, than FNAB would be recommended.
About the procedure of FNAB, i can say that it is painless (as painful as an muscular injection), doesn't have side effects (hematoma in some cases, that resolves in a few days) and 2-3 punctures are sufficient to give a correct result.
Hope i was somewhat useful.

Kind regards,
Dr.M.Guni
