How Safe Is Cesarean After A Normal Delivery?
My daughter experienced a full term pregnancy two years ago. All was well and she went into active labor and when she got to the hospital(20 minutes later), she was examined and put on a fetal monitor only to find out the baby was not alive and the cord had wrapped sometime during labor. We were all so devastated. Now she and her husband have bravely decided to get pregnant. She is 5 months pregnant and sees a high risk OB. He has mentioned that she will either have a cesarean or induced labor at 39 weeks. She has no other health problems and her very first pregnancy was normal as was a vaginal birth to her little girl now 4 yrs. old. Apparently my daughter has had long umbilical cords with the first two pregnancies. Can you share the risks, benefits, pros and cons of each type of delivery? Ps. She wants to breast feed. Thank you!

Usually a ultrasound scan will show if there is a cord around the neck just before planned delivery. Caesarean section is advised to avoid any mishaps if time is allowed for normal delivery. All doctors initially try for normal delivery but may need to shift to caesarean section if there is added risk to the mother and baby. The pros of normal delivery is that there is least stress to the mother and no surgical wound is made. In caesarean delivery the possibility of a prolonged delivery and subsequent fetal distress is not there.

According to the history the first delivery was normal vaginal with fullterm baby.
The second one was vaginal with dead born due to cord around the neck
Now the present pregnancy is 5 months duration. I hope that this deievery may end normal or abnormal. AT 5 months of pregnancy I can not predict the outcome .
Hence I advise her to attend routine antenatal check up regularly till 8 months and every week during 9 th month with early date of hospitalization for safer confinement.Breastfeeding is the best for first 5 to 6 months of baby.
