How Safe Is Anesthesia In Dental Procedures?

Is it safe to have the wisdom teeth removed in the dentist office under anesthesia. I saw a story on TV that indicated it could be unsafe if the anesthesia isn't administered by a qualified anesthesiologist Would it be safer to have the surgery done by an oral surgeon. The student is 18 years old.
