My mother is suffering from SLE since 20 years. doctors advised her many medication including Wysolone over the period of 20 yrs . currently she has been advised 7.5 mg dose per day. but she insist and takes only 5 mg per day as she claims that she does not want to get fat. what should I do ? should I inform the doctor the real dose she is taking? My mom is 60 yrs old
Good evening. Wysolone is a very good drug for SLE. But given over 20 years is a pretty long time. We normally tend to reduce it or stop it and add another medication like hydroxychloroquine or azathioprine. Cause long term use of wysolone can cause a few side effects. You need to monitor her blood sugars, blood pressure and cholestrol regularly along with Bone Density Scan at least once a year. You can ask your rheumatologist for alternative medication and if wysolone can be tapered provided the disease is in remission. Hope the information was useful
HCQ is anchor drug for SLE. Prednisolone is also frequently used drug. Dose depends upon severity. If she is asymptomatic then prednisolone can be further reduced, however HCQ should be continued. Common side effects of prednisolone are osteoporosis, dyslipedemia, hypertension and steroid induced diabtetes. 5 mg prednisolone is considered as low dose and lesser chances of side effects, however no dose is completely safe. Please titrate the dose under your Immunologist/Rheumatologist care.
