General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Folic acid should be taken right from the planning of pregnancy and during the first trimester in order to prevent brain defects in babies.

Around 5000mcg can be taken which is a sufficient dose. Higher doses may not be required.

It is a safe drug during pregnancy. Do not worry about the higher dose you have previously taken.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
