How Long The Foot And Mouth Disease Considered Contagious?

My son was diagnosed with hand foot and mouth disease yesterday. We are keeping him as isolated as possible. We had plans to go swimming a pool on the 4th. When would be be considered not contagious anymore? I don t want to take him to a pool (if he feels better) and put him in water with others.

Hi and thanks for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your son has. Although your child is most contagious with hand-foot-and-mouth disease during the first week of the illness, the virus can remain in his or her body for weeks after the signs and symptoms are gone. That means your child still can infect others. Keep him away from others would help protect the general public.

I hope this helps. I wish your son a quick recovery.
