hi, i am a patient suffering from psychotic episode. I am on respiridone 2 mg for the past 2 years and I have gained weight of about 7 kgs during the past 2 years. Still how long should I continue this medication?
hi..thanks for writing..i have understood your concerns...
psychotic episode is a vague term you have used here..there are different types of psychotic illnesses depending upon the duration of the episode and the symptomatology...
if you are not visiting your prescribing psychiatrist then you shud visit again..and ask for the decrease in the dosage or the possible discontinuation of the medication..
if you have suffered serious psychotic illness then the treatment has to be taken fr long...
if the weight gain is the problem then you can ask for the change in the medication, like aripiprazole, amisulpiride etc...
discuss your issued with your treating psychiatrist he will help you...he will guide you through treatment strategy..
some psychotic illnesses require treatment for 6 months only others require 1 year and repeated episodes of the same may require treatment for 5 years or more...
i hope this advice will be helpful to you..best of luck...
