How Long Should PPIs Be Continued?

After having stents put in my coronary artery last April, I was put on Plavix and 81mg aspirin. I have taken Omprezole for Barrett s esophagitis for over 10 years. My reflux seems under control using elevated head of bed, avoiding all trigger foods and losing weight. I have heard PPIs have bad side effects if used a long time. My cardiologist will not let me stop Omprezole. I am wondering if this is reasonable and if that drug may have caused the 90% and 70% blockages in my LAD. I also have bone on bone hip that needs replacing and he says I must wait a year. Have you any advice/help for me?

Hi,
Thanks for contacting HCM.
PPI is a relatively safe drug but prolonged use may have some problems,But since you have Barrett's esophagus, long term use of the same can be justified and benefits surely outweigh the risk!
Omeprazole does not have any relation with coronary artery disease so it has got nothing to do with your blocks.
Prolonged use of PPI may cause Osteoporosis (condition which reduces the bone strength and increases the chance of fractures). But it may not be the sole reason for your bone problem, may have some contribution though.
Consult a gastroenterologist regarding the use of PPI.
Hope I have addressed your concern.
Thank you.
