How Long Should Megestrol Acetate Be Taken?

My husband has been on Megestrol Acetate oral suspension 40 mg for about 4 weeks. This was due to his esophogectomy preformed on December 15, 2016. The surgeon prescribed the medication because he had no appetite or desire to eat. He was on a feeding tube since his surgery and was capable of eating but just had no desire to eat. After for weeks on the Megestrol Acetate he is eating on his own and his J-Tube has been removed. The surgeon said he usually does not manage this medication and he does not feel he needs to refill it. Can he discontinue using this medication or does it need to be titrated down.? Are there any concerns to worry about stopping the medication after four weeks?
