Hi, I have been on valsartan for 3 days, the first day my blood pressure came down a lot but today I took it and it s been running like 168/90 or 155/77. How long does it take for this drug to get my pressure down? Is it normal for it to work the first day and today it s back up?
Hello and welcome to HCM! I read abou your problem. It is quite common to have such reactions when first starting to take blood pressure lowering drug! Your body needs time to adapt to the new substance! The most probable reason for the restoring of your blood pressure could be that you took a lower than needed dose of valsartan! In this case the fisrt time that you use the drug the body reacts immediately because the substance is new for the body and the reaction is maximal. However , the dose was low and couldn't continue to keep the blood pressure low. Therefore, you probably need to increase the dose. Within 2-4 weeks the drug will permanently lower your blood pressure! Usually the treatment starts with a low dose (for example 40mg twice a day) and then the maintenance dose could be 80mg twice a day or more acording to the judge of doctor and patient's reaction). Please consult with your doctor about your concern and he/she will adapt the dose of valsartan. Best!
