How Is Triamcinolone Acetonide Different From Hydrocortisone?

re: Triamcinolone Acetonide 0.1% How is this cream different than hydrocortisone? I am concern about using a steroid. I am hoping this is not as worrisome for me. I am more of a naturalist but apparently this seems to be a positive way to rid my dermatisis. Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Both are Corticosteroids. Triamcinolone is a more potent Corticosteroid than Hydrocortisone. This might be both good and bad depending on the angle you view it from. A more potent Corticosteroid will reduce inflammation faster than a less potent one but it will have more side effects as well. The most potent Corticosteroids like Clobetasol for example should not be used for long. Triamcinolone is a medium potency Corticosteroid. Hydrocortisone is generally a low potency corticosteroid but certain formulations may be as potent as formulations containing Triamcinolone.
Using steroids may carry several untoward effects with it, like atrophy of the skin, predisposition to yeast infections, etc and even systemic effects like a higher blood sugar or even hormonal imbalance (both temporary). When necessary Corticosteroids may be miraculous in relieving inflammation and the symptoms associated with it. Such creams are commonly used in dermatology and you should not hesitate to use them if a doctor prescribed them to you.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
Please get back to me if you'd like more help.

Kind Regards!
