Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My Husband has chronic afib. He was taking Metoprolol for years. It stopped working about one year ago. He is in constant AFIB and went into Congestive heart failure in April. The Heart doctor took him off of the Metoprolo a year ago because it was not working and because it was very toxic to the kidney. What is the difference between that drug and Digoxin? And if after years the Metoprolo stopped working will the other drug work. His heart dr. said the Metoprolo was the strongest thing he could use?
cardiac failure has two phase compensated and decompensated. metaprolol is given to decrease the rate of progression of failure so that heart will decompensate slowly. once heart is decompensated metaprolol will further augment decompensation.on the other hand digoxin will improve heart function.
