How Harmful Is Fluoride When Ingested Through Toothpaste?

I ve recently been reading terrifying facts about fluoride and I m wondering about the safety of my Clinpro 5000 toothpaste. A recent study indicates a 5 point lowering in IQ as the fluoride level in drinking water went from about 0.3 ppm to 3.0 ppm. My toothpaste label says it contains 5000 ppm F-. Furthermore, the instructions on the label for an adult indicate that one should brush for two minutes then expectorate but NOT rinse the mouth. Which means there is a significant amount of fluoride being swallowed. The label goes on in the Warnings: DO NOT SWALLOW. My question is, how much poison am I ingesting? . . . and how is 5000 ppm f- legal if the ADA only allows 1100 ppm in toothpaste?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain the ideal amount of fluoride that should be present in toothpaste is generally 1000 ppm and a higher amount is however not needed..

But in case if you are using a toothpaste with higher fluoride levels you still do not tend to swallow nor a large amount is absorbed through the mucosa, so the toxicity being occurring is not relevant in this condition and is more a matter of concern in case if you drink fluoride containing water...

But still to be on a safer side and prevent long term side effects of using high fluoride concentration I would suggest you to use a low fluoride containing toothpaste..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
