Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It entirely depends on the size of hole. I guess it must be a larger hole from the scenario you explained. So should be done as early as possible may be within few months. Device closure is an option for smaller hole so should discuss with your doctor. Recovery usually occurs in 2 weeks. All the best.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

My sister has what they say is a hole in her heart. They want to do an angiogram to confirm how large it is and if further surgery should be done to close it up. Is this the right procedure for her. She is 80 years old and has no symptoms except a shortness of breath occasionally. Thank you.

Hi, my niece have a 2.4 cm hole in the heart...this was already diagnose when she was still a child and doctor advise just take medication as it may close itself in later years.. instead it become big (2.4cm). Doctor advise to go for open heart surgery to cure.. Is there any other less invasive surgery like using the catheter to patch it. Open heart is quite risky as it subject to infection, which may cause death.. Please advise and how much is the estimated cost. She is 26 years old now. Thanks...
