How Can Urinary Retention Be Treated?

I am a 68 year old female with problems emptying my bladder for the past month. I had a laproscopic hysterectomy last March for uterine prolapse, but no bladder repair was needed then. Now I can feel my bladder down in my vagina when I shower, and cannot empty my bladder well. Is there a drug that will help this condition? I am sure I have a cyctocele which will probably requite surgery at some point, but hopefully exercise and some drug would help now. Can you advise me?

Hello,

There is not really a drug that would help this. I suggest that you consult a urogynecologist. A pessary is helpful in some circumstances if you want to avoid another surgery. Pelvic floor strengthening exercises may help but are unlikely to fix this condition if it has progressed to the point that you describe.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regard,
Dr. Kathy Robinson
