How Can Trigeminal Neuralgia Be Treated?

My general practitioner recently diagnosed me with trigeminal neuralgia, but I ve looked up the symptoms and I m not sure they match mine. For the past two months I ve been experiencing intermittent pain on the right side if my face. It is located on the inside of my cheek, under my tongue, my lower lip, throughout my upper/lower jaw, my temple, and even down the right side of my throat. The pain is kind of dull and achy. I ve seen the dentist and have no problems with my teeth. I m a 35 year old woman, smoked for 20 years (quit this past May), and have no other health problems. I am absolutely terrified of oral cancer and I m wondering if my symptoms sound anything like it? Although I dont think I have any sores in my mouth, I don t routinely check. I do have an indent on my inner cheek where I believe I may bite it while I m sleeping, but it never hurts like a canker sore... Any insight on what may be wrong with me would be much appreciated!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear! Thank you for using HealthcareMagic!

I read your query and I understand your concern. I think you are suffering from trigeminal neuralgia and it has different causes . Your doctor may order an MRI scan of your head to determine if multiple sclerosis or a tumor is causing trigeminal neuralgia. In some cases, your doctor may inject a dye into a blood vessel to view the arteries and veins and highlight blood flow (magnetic resonance angiogram)
Treatment is
.Anticonvulsants. Doctors usually prescribe carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol, others) for trigeminal neuralgia, and it's been shown to be effective in treating the condition.
Antispasmodic agents. Muscle-relaxing agents such as baclofen (Gablofen, Lioresal) may be used alone or in combination with carbamazepine.
Botox injections.  Hope my answer was helpful. If yes, vote helpful.

Hope this clarifies your concerns. Thank you for the query.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka , General & Family Physician
