How Can Stomach Distention With Itching, Burning, Swelling And Redness Be Treated?

Hello Dr. Rynne. I have a slight overhang on my belly from previous surgeries and c-sections. Just today I noticed that it was itching and a little burning. I looked at it and it is swollen and red. What topical product should I apply to this skin problem?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I suggest a likely possibility of an Intertrigo, which is inflammation of the body folds.
Moist occlusive conditions in the fold resulting from overhanging belly and constant rubbing of the skin predisposes to intertrigo.
Candidal infection frequently supervenes and this further exacerbates the symptoms i.e redness, burning and itching.
If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to use a mild topical steroid preferably in combination of an antifungal e.g clotrimazole+beclomethasone combination cream, twice daily.
An Oral antifungal e.g fluconazole may also be started in addition.
An OTC oral antihistamine e.g cetrizine 10 mg once daily will provide you symptomatic relief from itching.
Keeping the folds dry would prevent recurrence and therefore once the condition resolves you may use an antifungal dusting powder regularly.
I suggest that you visit a dermatologist in your vicinity for a confirmatory diagnosis and for the needful.

Regards
