How Can Severe Pain In The Spine Be Treated?

i am on Oxycontin and Neurontin for control of my post surgical pain from laminectomy and fusion of spine, L2 to T5. I am also receiving OT & PT and wearing my physician s prescribed brace which he says I ll need for a minimum of 3 months. Because I fell and pulled some muscles, I am being put on a muscle relaxant. If I find it necessary to lower the dose of either the Oxycontin or Neurontin to minimize drowsiness, which should I lower in order to get the greatest pain control?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think you will need to tell us the exact dose of each medication you are taking with the exact frequency. Till one knows the exact dose of medicine that you are taking its difficult to tell exactly which medicine to reduce. What's more you should get it changed by the prescription doctor because the medicines can be replaced to different medicines. To give you a brief response to your message oxycontin has a higher drowsiness quotient compared to neurocontin. Having said that, in higher doses neurocontin can cause drowsiness too.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
