How Can Severe Pain After Wisdom Tooth Extraction Be Treated?

Hello. My son had only one wisdom tooth extracted at the beginning of this week, but now he has terrible pain. He has been taking his antibiotics and gently rinsing with warm salt water a couple of times a day. The DDS did not suture him; my first question is, "Is it common to [not] suture the extracted site?

My next and biggest concern is when I looked in his mouth, there was a long string-like grey piece of skin you could pull over onto the took (coming forward). Should I be concerned? I understand, after reading up on the skin cell death issue, but I am very concerned that he has this long stringy-looking piece of skin that, in all honesty, looks like a long piece of noodle (sorry, only way to describe it in writing).

I have some other concerns with this particular dentist (she was new to us) and I am now worried my son may need to be seen by a DDS, but I will not want to take him back to her, long story, but just trying to figure this out until I can get him seen and that piece of skin... I looks horrible and something that needs to be cut off. I kid you not, it's long and awful looking. I almost pulled on it with some clean tweezers thinking he had something lodged in the area. (It's long and thin; not normal looking, IMHO and certainly not anything I've ever seen).
Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated and if you feel this needs to be addressed and removed (the long stringy-looking piece of dying skin), please advise or if you can help put my concerns to rest... I appreciate the thoughts and direction at this point.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

It looks like your son has lost his blood clot from.tge extraction site that is responsible for initiating healing and there is formation of Dry Socket..

Dry socket is an unhealed socket that can be very painful..

The long thin strand can be the partially attached portion of the mucosa or can be the strand of blood clot that is somewhat attached to the inside of the socket..

However for a confirmation a clinical examination is a must..
But to tell you that it is not something that cannot be treated and your son will be fine .

You should consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated..
If there is a dry socket then a sedative pack will be placed like Zinc oxide eugenol to heal the socket..
The long strand like thing will be removed..

As of now he should take painkillers like Ibuprofen and if pain is severe he can take Tramadol or Ketorolac..

Hope this helps..

Regards .
