How Can Severe Anxiety Be Treated?

my wife was given alprazolam .5 mg after hip surgery because they thought she was having an anexiaty attack. Her wellness has got worse. She has thoughts that she will never get well and is going to die. She does not eat much at all and feels like she is going to vomit. We plan to stop the Xanax. Can you help?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello,

As you have mentioned your wife is suffering from anxiety attack and is not responding much with Xanax. Xanax is given only for acute anxiety attack, it does not prevent further attacks. At present your wife requires SNRI group of medicines like Desvenlafaxine to prevent anxiety attacks.

She can take Clonazepam during acute anxiety attack which is better than Xanax. I suggest you to consult your psychiatrist and get opinion on this.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prashant Gohil
