My husband is 82 years old and in poor health; COPD and heart problems. He is a very neat and clean person and takes pride in his appearance. He has a chronic runny nose. He will be eating a meal and his nose will drip and he isn t even aware that it is happening. His doctor has prescribed allergy meds, but they have no effect, What can we do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

There are some persons who get runny nose in unusual situations.Gustatory rhinitis refers to runny nose in response to food.

There are medications that can help, his doctor can determine if they are safe with the other meds that he uses.
Eg(1) ipratropium nasal spray,
(2) topical decongestants such as normal saline or otrivine,
(3) oral antihistamines,
(4)topical steroids eg flonase, avamys, rhinocort

I hope this helps
