How Can Recurrent Strep Throat Infection Be Treated?

Hi. Okay so I had strep throat back at the end of December and I got amoxicillin and I forgot to take like the last 2 days of it so it had come back in the beginning of January and I never went to the doctors the second time because we had no insurance. Then it came back AGAIN mid January and I went to med express and they diagnosed it as tonsillitis and gave me some pills & steroids for swelling. Well guess what it's back AGAIN!!!! I've had it another time between then too. I'm miserable and it hurts to swallow and speak 24/7. I'm weak and my ear hurts. I have no appetite and my tonsils look awful. I've been taking cough drops, drinking tea, taking aspirin, resting, etc but nothing seems to work. And it keeps returning. It's a bacterial infection at this point. Am I going to have to get my tonsils out? I'd rather not. What do I do? Is there anything else I CAN do??

Hello,

First I want to know have you done an antibiotic-gram which shows which antibiotic is best to use. And then you should use the antibiotic for 10-14 days. After that re-control with another throat culture. About getting your tonsils out I will say that this is a solution when you have more than 6 episodes of tonsillitis a year.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Elona Dashi
