How Can Painful Spider Veins On The Leg Be Treated?

I have had a few spider veins on the side of my leg for years, but now at 58 years old, all of a sudden I notice a pinch with a quick pain every once in a while in that area as I m walking around the house. They never bothered me before. Why is it doing that all of a sudden?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.
The pain you described may be due to blood clots getting formed in those dilated spider veins or also called varicose veins.
If I were your treating doctor,I recommend,
-Advice investigations like Colour Doppler for blood circulation of legs, blood coagulation factors tests,USG abdo. for detecting underlying cause.
- Apply compression stocking to the leg.
-Maintain the skin hygiene and moisture over the veins.
-Sit or sleep with the leg elevated.
-Avoid standing for too long at one place.Do frequent ankle exercises like doing flexion, extension, rotational movements at ankles joint.
-Avoid smoking.
-If the symptoms persist or ulceration develops at site, visit to surgeon for consideration of options like sclerotherapy or ligation operation.
-Keep a watch over symptoms like sudden shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, headache, vision problem, weakness of limbs eye and report immediately to ER if anything of such happens.
