How Can Pain In The Eyes Be Treated?

My husband had cataract surgery last December. He immediately developed staph infection. He almost lost his eye. He cannot seem to wean off of steroid eye drops,Belen when given ibuprofen like drops. Once again he has gone eight days without the steroid drop but his eye continues to hurt mall the time, sometimes almost making him ill all over. What can be done?
