How Can Muscle Sprain In The Rib Cage Be Treated?

My sports medicine doc gave me a x-ray 8 wks ago and told me I had an intercoastal muscle sprain between the 6th & 7th ribs. I overstreched to the left while working on the roof of a outside shed roof. He recommended hot & cold packs also Tylenol xtra as I cannot take NSAID s because I have only 1 kidney. After almost 9 wks. the pain is still severe & prevents me sleeping nights, not to mention what I have endured for the past 8 wks. Should I got for another x-ray or any suggestions would be appreciated & thanks. Harry

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Since rib cage is a regularly moving area due to breathing healing takes time and even violent breathing and coughing worsens the pain.
Need to meet physiotherapist and get ultrasound therapy to the region which gives the best relief in such cases and avoid exercised for 3 to 4 weeks.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
