How Can Multiple Myeloma Be Treated?

Is Multiple Myeloma best treated when it is found earlier. My husband was recently diagnosed Feb 2018 with Multiple myeloma after having very low blood counts and shortness of breath. After obtaining medical records I have found out his blood counts (wbc, rbc and platelets, etc) have been falling since 2011. Now 90% of the blood he is making on his own is cancerous. My question is, would this have been easier to manage if this would have been checked into further back in 2011?
