How Can Insomnia Be Treated In A Person With Anxiety Despite Taking Ativan?
I have bouts of insomnia(trouble following asleep) and have had for many years. I take 40 mg of Paxil every morning. I excercise, drink alcohol in moderation. I have Ativan that doctor prescribed and have taken in the past. I was doing really well and then this week I have had my sleeping issues. I ve been diagnosed with anxiety also which I know comes hand in hand. Tonight I went to bed about 9:15 and here I am still awake. I drank some alcohol around 6:00 pm tonight. I am afraid to take the Ativan or my Melatonin and have been looking on the internet to find some answers. I m about to make some warm milk. Deb
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Well, insomnia may be difficult to treat, but there are some methods which can be used. Treatment options include behavior and lifestyle changes, medicines, and complementary medicines.
You need to change your dietary habits and these include changing your sleep area or schedule, watching what and when you eat and drink, and being more active.
It's also important to keep regular bedtimes and wake times-7 days a week-and to try to avoid taking naps during the day. Prescription sleep medicines may also help and include diazepam and similar medicines.
Melatonin is supplement which may be of help as well. In severe cases, special testing is needed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
