How Can Infantile Seizures Be Managed?

Hi, I have niece with Down syndrome, she ll be 2 in April. She started walking last 2-3 weeks, doesn t speak but is very intelligent, understands more then his normal brother at his age. I ve read about infantile seizures and I m not sure how to react. She sometimes stretches her neck very intensively and eyes are wide wide open as if she s paralysed for a moment, it lasts only a few seconds. I m not sure to be concerned about this or not. I live in a developing country and our doctors are not brilliant especially in this case. Please answer. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

This looks like a type of seizures what we call absence seizures .Absence seizure do occur in children and moslty disappears with advance ages.

In would suggest you should talk to a neuralogist in this regards. We generally need an EEG to confirm it.

Another good idea wold be to make a video of her durring this time (if you get chance) and show it to your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
