How Can High Fever Along With Cough Be Treated?

My 14 year old (otherwise healthy) son has had a fever for 8 days now. In the mornings he is fine, but fever returns in the afternoon. The temperatures are getting lower than in the beginning (a week ago his highest reached 104). Now temperatures range from 98.6 in the mornings to 101.4 in afternoon.On day 5 with the fever I took him to the doctor, but they sent us home saying it is a virus and it has to run its course. He also has a cough, but looks ok and does not feel too bad. How long can a viral fever last for? if he feels ok should I keep waiting longer or do I need to do something? thank you

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In viral fever symptomatic management is needed. It resolves usually in a week. If no improvement in a week than CBC and auscultation should be done for further work up. Vitamin C tablet also to be taken for five days.

If not improving after a week then do further workup and physical examination as described above.
