How Can Grand Mal Seizure Be Treated?

My 25 y/o son has had two grand mal seizures in the last 2 months. He is a very anxious person anyway so he overcompensates with alprazolam. Could the mixing of medications or illegal substances cause seizures of this type? I worry about the things he did to his body in college and what he continues to do. They gave him IV Heppra in the ED, but he didn t fill the script because he said it made him restless. Any advice besides the obvious??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, illicit use of drugs can cause symptoms similar to grand mal seizures. Sometimes withdrawal from drugs may cause similar symptoms. Let him take the medications prescribed to him by the treating Physician.

He should avoid addictions if any, stay away from stress and take adequate sleep, he should keep himself well hydrated to maintain the electrolyte balance of the body. Adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K,
