Hello. Thanks for asking on Healthcaremagic. A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. There could be many types of goiter occurring due to various reasons. Sometimes the goiter extends behind the chest bone and extends on the inner side which might not be apparent to the naked eye. It is called plunging goiter and it is only detected on the ultrasound. We can only see the visible part of the thyroid. In this the thyroid gland enlarges and presses on the orsophagus and trachea in the neck. As a result the patient has difficulty in breathing and swallowing food. It is always advisable that if you are having such critical symptoms you must consult a surgeon and after thorough tests like thyroid hormone blood profile, ultrasound neck and a fine needle aspiration cytology to rule out any malignancy... You must go in for removal of the goiter. These symptoms are indications for surgery. Hope I helped. Kindly consult a surgeon. Thanks.
