How Can Genital Herpes Be Treated?

I was told by my doctor 10 days ago that I have genital herpes, I have not had sex of any kind with anyone since my husband passed away 11 years ago, I have not stopped crying since that day. I was given medicine and I have taken it as prescribed until gone. My heart is broken. How do I go on living with this knowing it may return at anytime. I am 77 years old.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, my name is Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi. I understand your concern.
There are three major drugs commonly used to treat genital herpes symptoms:
-acyclovir (Zovirax)
-famciclovir (Famvir),
-valacyclovir (Valtrex). These are all taken in pill form. They are taken seven to 10 days of antiviral therapy to relieve them or prevent them from getting worse.
Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help, thanks!
