How Can Elevated Bilirubin Levels Be Treated?

Hello Sir, My husband has been has diagnosed with Hepatomegaly with fatty coarse echo texture and moderate spleenlomegaly. His LFT enzymes are normal. But bilirubin is high, which is 2. He has a history of alcohol abuse, but it s been already 9months he has left drinking, still there is no sign of improvement. We were consulting a Physician who has advise us to visit higher institutes like Asian Institute of gastroenterology. Is the coarse echo texture of the liver reversible? What should we do ? Will he be alright? My husband seems to have taken out Physician s advice in a v negative way. He has started to believe that he can t b alright n he has lesstime left. Kindly advice sir. N has his liver reached to the point of no recovery?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is said that when the liver tissue is healthy upto even 25% of the total, at this point of time if the patient completely gives up alcohol, the liver can rejuvenate itself over the course of time. But if it goes beyond that it is difficult to heal. But at this point of time i suggest you to take your husband to an apex institute like Asian Institute of Gastro-enterology as suggested by your doctor. There will be many newer modalities of treatment which may be helpful. If the liver is damaged beyond control the only way is liver transplant. Make sure your husband takes medications without fail as prescribed by your doctor. Also i will suggest some diet recommendation bs which he needs to follow

1. Eat nutritious foods: Nutritious foods promote energy and help maintain a healthy liver function. A healthy working liver promotes toxin removal and can process bilirubin into bile. Healthy foods include whole grains, fish, fruits and vegetables, olive oil, and low fat dairy.
2. Eat more fiber: Fiber can also help rejuvenate the liver. The recommended fiber intake is 35 grams for women and 25 grams for men. Studies have shown that a healthy intake of fiber can be successful in lowering bilirubin levels.
3. Choose red vegetables and fruits: The compound that gives fruits and vegetables their red color also works to lower bilirubin levels. Tomatoes have the highest level of this compound, so enjoying them regularly can maintain healthy bilirubin levels.
4. Avoid unhealthy foods: Sugar and fat can wreak havoc on your liver, causing sickness and impairing its function. When your liver cannot function well, bilirubin levels can go up. Avoid fast food, fried food, processed food, and sugary foods in order to maintain a healthy liver.
5. Eat barley: Barley has been shown to promote toxin removal. An easy way to enjoy barley is drinking a roasted barley powder dissolved in water with some honey.
6. Eat radishes: Radishes have been shown to help improve liver function – they are often used to treat jaundice. You can eat radishes or even drink radish juice to get in an adequate amount for a healthy liver support. Most important of all advice to him- completely abstain from alcohol. Otherwise all the treatment is useless.
