How Can Cysts In The Liver Be Treated?

Hi Doc, An Ultrasound found several cysts on my liver recently & I just had a CTscan to investigate my liver further. I have not received the results yet. I m concerned however the following blood tests are in range ; AST, ALT, Albumin, bilirubin & Globulin. Are the cysts dangerous ? I m a male 69 yrs old, not overweight, don t smoke, seldom drink alcohol and exercise moderately about 4 - 5 days weekly. Your feedback is appreciated... Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In most cases these spots are benign growths such as cysts or hemangiomas. Hemangioma is very small and this cant cause such symptoms unless larger than 10cm. He should do MRI scan or liver biopsy to find what type of lesion it is. Less common this may be malignant issues such as hepatocellular carcinoma . His abdominal pain may not be related to liver spots at all. It may always be sign of some other issues such as IBD or gastritis. If these are just simple liver cysts then I dont think this is causing his symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
