How Can Chronic Insomnia Be Treated?

I am having severe insomnia. I can sometimes fall asleep fairly quickly but won’t stay asleep. My doctor has prescribed sleep aides but never help or make the issues worse. I may sleep anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 to 2 1/2 hours. I also deal with a sensation in my legs like they are crawling or jittery. Once my legs start doing this I have to get up and activity stops the sensation. I also sometimes will have this issue with my legs if I am sitting or traveling in a car. I can sometimes can take a hot bath which will help. I live a very normal quite life style. I have been married for 38 years. Our children are grown and married and we have 4 beautiful grandchildren that we see regularly and are very active with. Just don’t know which way to turn please help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello there,
Thank you for consulting Health care magic.
According to the problems and sequences you have described me, I am of the opinion that you have GAD (generalised Anxiety Disorder). Calcium profile, and thyroid and parathyroid profile should also be done. As the jerks you have complained about is called Myoclonus and forms a part of restless leg syndrome. Higher Thyroid hormones or lower calcium levels accentuates this condition. I will advise you to consult a local neurologist to conduct an EMG and then accordingly consult me with reports.
Thank you
Dr Ashish
