How Can Chronic Cough In A Child Be Treated?

I have an 11 year old girl who is 70 pounds and has been having coughing fits for the past 6 days. she has been reluctant to participate in gym class. she has also had trouble participating in her entire ballet class without feeling tired or starting to cough. in the past she has had five upper respiratory infections and associated coughing in the past 18 months. she describes her cough as dry and says that she wakes up more than once a night due to the coughing.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Get the girl tested for blood counts; she seems to have allergic cough with bronchitis suggested by her typical symptoms.

Some anti allergic drugs with needful antibiotics and bronchodilators would help her. Let her take rest for few days, avoid sour or cold things, dust, and smoke. Drink warm water and plain diet.

You can give her Derriphyllin syrup over the counter for some relief. Please consult her doctor for antibiotic if no relief in 3 days.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
