How Can Avascular Necrosis In The Joints Be Treated?
Hello, I am a 36 yr old female with avascular necrosis in several joints in my body. I have received a total left knee replacement at 33 yrs old. I also had a core decompression on my left hip at age 31. I was recently diagnosed with avn in my right talus. Ortho doc said it was significant avn but has not yet collapsed. He said that all he could do is a bone fusion. However for the next 2 months he wants me to wear a brace to see if that helps. I m just wondering is this is all that can be done. To me a bone fusion seems pretty drastic and if there are any other options out there I would like to know about them. Thank you

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Management of avascular necrosis depends on the degree of movement limitations caused/duration of the problem & the age or health of the patient... also the basic cause. No treatment delays the advent of disease & no help for prevention or regression has been seen.
Palliative management consists of -
-Rest /reduced weight bearing with help of gadgets like Cruches.
-Oral cause specific medication with expert consultation.
-Extracorporeal shock wave therapy as per expert advise.
-Surgery.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale,
