Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Good day! I had 2D echo test. And doctor said that the result said I have severe aortic stenosis with aortic valve area of 1.0cm. He said I should undergo with surgery right away. I want to know if I really need to undergo an operation? Is it really dangerous?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It depends. Fundamentally, there are warnings of fluid build up, blacking out, or angina. After the symptoms begin and it might be decades before it does. After the onset of symptoms, patients with severe aortic stenosis have a survival rate as low as 50% at 2 years and 20% at 5 years without aortic valve replacement. OR opening up the valve with a stop gap surgery. The mechanical metal valves often last decades. Pig valves last 5 to 10 years. Just opening it up is a bit less than the pig valve.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman
