How Can An Inguinal Hernia Be Treated?

I have been diagnosed with inguinal hernia.I do not have any pain or any kind of discomfort. My doctor suggests to wait and see.I am 60 years old.I have been told that the only one way to get rid of hernia is a surgery. So,should I wait or go for surgery as quickly as possible?Should I keep working out /I am lightly built and use light weights/or stop it?Appreciate the answers.Jan Thomas

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The cure for an inguinal hernia is surgery. However, not all inguinal hernias need immediate treatment and can remain that way for a long time.

If your doctor said that it is small, you just need to take few precautions.
• Avoid lifting weights more than 3 kilograms.
• Wear a protective belt while exercising abdominal muscles or lifting anything heavier.
• Strengthen the core body muscles.
• Consult your doctor before starting any new exercise regimen.

You can go ahead with routine exercises and activities.

If there is any change in size or you develop abdominal pain, please see your doctor right away. In this scenario, it is better to have the surgery done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prabhakar Laxman Jathar
