How Can An Ingrown Toe Nail Be Treated?

I have a new toenail growing under my old one. The new nail has gotten about half way, and now the one on top is still attached at the top, but loose the rest of the way. I’m afraid of catching it on something and ripping it off. Would that actually be better?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Since you have already a new nail growing under the old one, the hanging nail, in fact, can be caught somewhere and cause more problems. The toenails grow very slow hence it will take months for the old one to fall off or so on.

Get the consultation of a General Surgeon for clinical evaluation and see if this nail can be filed or needs surgical excision. Follow his advice strictly to avoid any complication.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant
