How Can An Ingrown Nail Be Treated?

My big toenail was injured in April and the whole toenail fell off a day ago after 6 months. A new nail has already grown underneath about halfway but it looks like it s growing INTO the skin and not over it. Like the skin is higher than the new nail and I m not sure the nail will, or can, grow over it. The new nail is also bulbous and grooved at the end although the part closest to the cuticle looks ok. Is this normal or do I need to see a podiatrist. Many thanks
