I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH E- COLI. IT STARTED OUT AS A U.T.I. I WAS GIVEN AN ANTI-BIOTIC FOR 3 DAYS WHICH DIDN'T WORK. THEY GAVE ME ANOTHER ONE FOR 10 DAYS. IT KEPT GETTING WORSE. THEY GAVE IT TO ME FOR 10 MORE DAYS. IT STILL GOT WORSE. BY THEN, I HAD PUS IN MY URINE, WHEN I URINATED, I COULDN'T SEE THE BOTTOM OF THE BOWL. THEY ARE GIVING ME A DIFFERENT ANTI-BIOTIC NOW WHICH IS CLEARING UP MY URINE BUT MY BACK IS EXTREMELY SORE. I AM NOW TAKING MORPHINE FOR THE PAIN. MY QUESTION IS- HOW CONTAGIOUS IS THIS? HOW DO I KEEP FROM SPREADING IT?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for asking. I have read &understood your concern. It seems you have severe uti .. non responding to the antibiotics given. That way also urinary tract being made of a complicated system of filtering waste materials in our body.... it needs a sufficiently long course of antisuitable&effective antibiotic to get rid of infection. Short or incomplete course can cause bacterial resistance to drugs &tends to repeat &progress of the the disease. I feel this is the cause of your prolonged illness. *I would suggest consultation of a urologist...culture &sensitivity test of urine forpin pointing the causative organism &effective antibiotic .Starting the suitable antibiotics as per expert advise &taking it for the advised period .. reckecing of urine for complete cure &maintenence of preventuve dose over few months as per advise is the way to complete cure. *About infectivity.... few possibiliries of passing it on with sexual contact./ strict personal hygiene is a must in uti.. -Drinking sufficient water helps clearing the infection. -Avoid back exercises /massage of paiful back. Thanks.
