How Can Adenocarcinoma Of The Esophagus Be Treated?

My mother was diagnosed with stage 2b adenocarcinoma of the esophagus in December 2016. She had 3 different EGD s done in the past 4 years that saw a, pouch that continued to grow. My question is why was there never a biopsy done of this area to confirm if this pouch was benign or cancerous. Finally in December 2016 she saw a different GI who decided to scoped her again to figure out why she was not able to swallow. The doctor tried 3 times to pass a pediatric scope with no luck and right where this pouch was he did a biopsy that confirmed the diagnosis of stage 2b adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. Can a tumor grow so big from August 2016 to December 2016 that it could completely occlude the esophagus? Searching for some answers as to what could have happened. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is possible that the pouch looked completely benign, making the a priori likelihood of cancer very low. In hindsight, of course, biopsies should have been taken before. GI tumors generally grow slow, so it is unlikely that the growth itself explains her symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
