How Can Achlorhydria Be Treated?

I have achlorhydria. My stomach ph levels are 7.5. I have developed b-12, iron, and vitamin d deficiencies. I inject 1000mcg of cobalamin daily, take 27 mg iron along with vitamin d supplements daily. I have a history of carcinoid tumors (located only in the stomach) and go for annual endoscope to have them resected. My gastrin level typically exceeds 2000. I have daily nausea and have developed neurological problems such as balance issues and neuropathy. I also have severe weakness especially my legs. I currently take Creon to aid in my digestion but this falls short since I have bought a of loose stools which are fatty and very smelly. I m not sure what else I can do to manage my symptoms better. Any incite would help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, Welcome to Ask a doctor services. I have read your query & can understand your concern. The treatment of Achlorhydria depends upon what is the pathological condition that is causing your body system to secrete low levels of stomach acids. These acids play an important role in the digestion by releasing digestive enzymes & also kill any pathology(bacteria/ virus) in the stomach, thus protecting us from infections. Achlorhydria can be caused due to infection(H.Pylori) or any other medical condition, you need to connect with the doctor & get treated.

Visit a Neurosurgeon for the weakness developing in the legs without delay, you need medications. Due to inadequate stomach acid your system is having difficulty in absorbing the iron & other minerals into the digestive tracts. Get treated, take care.

Dr Nupur K
