Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, i have a 8 year old son and he has a perforation in his left year. ET doctor says it s about 5mm wide, and it has been there for 3-4 years now. When i read online it looks like perforation should have healed on its own but for him it hasn t. My doctor keeps doing a hearing test for him and for normal frequency range he passes the test while fails for lower frequency range. Now the doctor is suggesting to got for surgery to cure perforation. How safe is the surgery ? Also, my son keeps having a lot of ear infections. Every now n then.
Based on your description, it is essential to follow the advise of your doctor and go for surgery to correct the perforation in the ear.
This will help to minimise the infections and would also improve his hearing to a certain extent. Also repeated infections could land him up with fibrosis, after which the hearing loss would be permanent.
The most common surgical procedure is called 'tympanoplasty'. Surgeon grafts a tiny patch of his own tissue to close the hole in the eardrum. This procedure is most commonly done on an outpatient basis, and one can usually go home the same day unless medical anesthesia conditions require a longer hospital stay.
Kindly consult your doctor for the surgery and do the necessary follow-up as advised.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Ashakiran S,
